Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in a therapy session?
Each therapy session is approximately 55 minutes long. The first one or two sessions are called the "intake assessment". I'll be asking a lot of questions about various areas of your life such as family relationships, support networks and medical history as well as your past and current functioning. From there, we will develop treatment goals and discuss strategies and interventions that can be used. You will always be in charge of the direction treatment takes and you have the right to change course at any time.
How long will I have to be in therapy?
In the beginning, I strongly recommend weekly sessions in order to gain momentum and get relief from symptoms. The frequency of sessions can increase or decrease based on your needs. While there is no way to predict how long you will need to be in therapy to achieve your goals, please let me know if you have a timeframe in mind. I will do my best to tailor interventions to your needs.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, I am not authorized to prescribe medication. If you decide you would like to incorporate medication as part of your treatment, I can provide referrals to some reputable psychiatrists in the area.
Is what I say during session confidential?
Yes. Adult clients have the right to confidentiality under the law. This applies to verbal communications as well as your client record. Your information cannot be released without your written consent. There are three exceptions to confidentiality. Those exceptions are (1) you plan to seriously harm or kill yourself or someone else (2) you report the abuse or neglect of a child or elder (3) you are involved in the legal system and a judge subpoenas your record.
